MANILA, Philippines — Broadband provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc. is expediting its transition to an electric vehicle fleet to shield its installation, maintenance and repair efforts from oil price shocks.

Converge is doubling its e-vehicle fleet by adding more than 100 units that would be assigned for installation, maintenance and repair of broadband services in Metro Manila.

The company currently relies on a fleet of over 120 battery-powered and hybrid cars that facilitate on-ground repair and sales works across Metro Manila.

Converge corporate sustainability officer Laurice Esteban-Tuason said the company is speeding up its e-vehicle adoption after seeing the impact of oil price shocks. For Converge, the goal is to keep operational expenses stable even during a crisis.

Esteban-Tuason said Converge is finding alternative sources of energy for its operations to cut its dependence on fossil fuel. Apart from e-vehicle adoption, the company is looking for sustainable sources of energy to power its data centers.

“At Converge, we have been expanding our use of alternative sources for our data centers and in gradually electrifying service vehicles as part of a long-term effort to reduce carbon emissions,” Esteban-Tuason said.

“At the same time, this has also become a strategic approach to managing operational risks,” she added.

Converge aims to switch 20 percent of its fleet — or one in five vehicles — into electric and hybrid types by 2030 in line with the push to bring down its carbon emissions.

Internally, Converge is encouraging its employees to switch to e-vehicles for work. The provider came up with a car subsidy program to incentivize its personnel who shifted to e-vehicles.

Converge also installed a charging station in its headquarters in Pasig to support e-vehicles for installation, maintenance and repair services. It also plans to set up more charging stations for other offices, particularly in Metro Manila.

Recently, Converge increased the download speed of its flagship service FiberX at no cost to subscribers, responding to the sudden increase in network demand as work goes online.

Converge raised the broadband speed of all FiberX plans by up to 50 Mbps to support customers who were forced to migrate to work-from-home setups due to elevated fuel prices.
