MANILA, Philippines — Community journalist Frenchie May Cumpio and church worker Mariel Domequil are seeking relief from the Court of Appeals (CA) after a trial court in Tacloban, Leyte denied their request to overturn their conviction for terror financing.
Cumpio and Domequil, through their counsels, requested the appellate court to nullify the ruling of the Tacloban City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 45, which found them guilty of violating Republic Act 10168 or the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act of 2012.
The defendants asked the CA to junked the omnibus order issued by the trial court on March 25, which denied their joint motion for reconsideration.
They asked the CA to consider their “questions of fact and of law,” saying the ruling was not made in accordance with the law, prevailing jurisprudence and evidence.
In the assailed ruling, RTC Judge Georgina Uy-Perez said the defendants supplied the communist group firearms, clothing and money.
The court said the defendants’ motion for reconsideration lacked merit.
