MANILA, Philippines — The voter registration for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao parliamentary elections will start today, as lawmakers eye the holding of the first BARMM polls in September, the Commission on Elections said.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the resumption of voter registration aims to ensure that all eligible people in BARMM can participate in the upcoming elections.
“We want to announce that voter registration, which was previously suspended nationwide, will resume on Feb. 9. Our countrymen in Bangsamoro can register again,” Garcia said.
He said people could avail themselves of the Comelec’s Registration Anywhere Program, which allows Bangsamoro voters to register outside their home provinces.
Voters can register in the capital towns of their localities or in highly urbanized cities such as Cebu and Cagayan de Oro or in the cities of Metro Manila, he added.
According to Garcia, the resumption of voter registration will cover both the BARMM parliamentary elections and the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls.
Garcia said recent hearings in Congress indicate a consensus to hold the BARMM parliamentary elections in September, adding that voters registered for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections would be allowed to participate in the Bangsamoro polls, subject to the provisions that will be set in the final law.
Earlier, Garcia said the BARMM parliamentary elections would no longer push through on March 30, citing the lack of an enabling redistricting law and limited time for poll preparations.
