MANILA, Philippines —  Preparations for the conduct of a special election in the second legislative district of Antipolo City are proceeding smoothly, with no major challenges reported so far, the Commission on Elections said yesterday.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the poll body has yet to encounter significant issues as it has been coordinating with security forces and local stakeholders ahead of the voting scheduled on Saturday.

Garcia said the Comelec will distribute tomorrow election paraphernalia to teachers assigned in eight barangays, particularly in areas that are far from the center of the city center.

The early distribution intends to ensure that polling precincts will open on time.

Senior citizens, persons with disabilities and pregnant voters may cast their votes ahead, from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. Voting will close at 3 p.m.

The election will cover 252,793 registered voters who may cast their votes in 36 polling centers and 348 precincts.

Garcia has dismissed rumors that a poll candidate has been disqualified, describing the allegation as fake news.

He warned that candidates who make discriminatory or offensive statements, whether during a rally or online may face sanctions including possible disqualification.

The Comelec is targeting to proclaim the winning candidate on Sunday. The special poll is being held following the death of Rep. Romeo Acop.
