MANILA, Philippines — The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group has withdrawn the subpoena issued against Sen. Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa in connection with an investigation into alleged extrajudicial killings in the Davao region, citing respect for the Senate's protective custody order.

In a video statement Tuesday, May 13, Philippine National Police spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said CIDG personnel had served a recall of the subpoena duces tecum to Dela Rosa's staff.

"Ito ay may kaugnayan sa pinag-usapan ni Chief PNP at director ng CIDG bilang respeto sa institution ng Senado, kaugnay ng Senate protection order na inissue nila para kay Sen. Bato dela Rosa," Tuaño said. (This is related to discussions between the PNP chief and the CIDG director out of respect for the institution of the Senate, in connection with the Senate protection order issued for Sen. Bato dela Rosa.)

Tuaño made clear, however, that the withdrawal of the subpoena does not mean the investigation has been terminated.

He said the CIDG probe into alleged killings during Dela Rosa's tenure as Davao police chief would continue.

Senate protection

The CIDG issued the subpoena on May 10 as part of its investigation into Dela Rosa's alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings in the Davao region.

The agency cited statements made by retired police officer Arturo Lascañas during hearings conducted by the House Quad Committee.

Dela Rosa has remained inside the Senate since Monday, May 11 after the chamber placed him under protective custody following a failed attempt by authorities to arrest him.

The senator resurfaced at the Senate after months out of public view and participated in the vote that installed Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano as Senate president.

The arrest attempt came hours before the International Criminal Court publicly confirmed the existence of a warrant against Dela Rosa over crimes against humanity allegations tied to the Duterte administration's anti-drug campaign.
