MANILA, Philippines — Students will have a 16-day Christmas break from Dec. 20 until Jan. 4, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced yesterday.

In its Facebook page, the DepEd posted that the Christmas break starts on Dec. 20 and classes resume on Jan. 5 next year.

This is in compliance with DepEd Order No. 12 issued by Secretary Sonny Angara last April 15, covering the Multi-Year Implementing Guidelines on the School Calendar and Activities to be followed by public elementary and secondary schools and community learning centers (CLCs).

A provision of the circular states:  “The holiday break occurs during the last two weeks of December, with classes resuming within the first week of January of the following year.”

Angara issued the circular to enable schools and CLCs to effectively and efficiently plan and implement their school activities and maximize instructional time.

This is also cognizant of the goals and objectives of President Marcos’ eight-point socioeconomic agenda and the five-point reform agenda of DepEd.

Meanwhile, the DepEd said it plans to expand the agency’s broadcast-based learning platforms through the soft launch of DepEd TV, which Angara said is in partnership with Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI) and Solar Learning.

Through this initiative, DepEd aims to modernize instructional delivery while staying true to the administration’s learning recovery efforts.

“If there are more ways to bring quality education to every home and school, we would be closer to the dream of a Bagong Pilipinas . DepEd TV will help us close learning gaps by bringing structured, curriculum-based lessons directly to our students,” Angara said.

The collaboration will air curriculum-aligned DepEd TV content through KCFI’s on-air, online and offline platforms, supported by Solar’s broadcast infrastructure.

These channels span broadcast distribution through cable, direct-to-home satellite and digital terrestrial television. They also include digital learning resources and platforms, as well as offline solutions such as school-based television packages and portable media libraries that allow teachers to integrate video lessons into daily instruction even without internet access.
