MANILA, Philippines – Margarita Fores has died at the age of 65, her son, Amado Fores, confirmed in an Instagram post on Tuesday, February 11.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my Mom, Margarita A. Forés. Our family is mourning this unexpected loss, and we kindly ask for your prayers during this time. We will be able to share more in due time,” Amado wrote.

Margarita — also known as Gaita — was named Asia’s Best Female Chef of 2016, a title given to her by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards. Margarita was trained as a public accountant, but later went down the culinary route to set up a catering business, Cibo di M, after returning home from a trip to Italy in 1987.

Ten years later, in 1997, she opened her first restaurant, the well-loved Cibo, which serves Italian cuisine. Today, it has more than 20 locations across the Philippines.

Margarita is also the chef behind the French-Italian restaurant, Lusso. – Rappler.com
