Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy

Aldo Nelbert Banaynal

MANILA, Philippines — In observance of the Holy Week, Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy yesterday encouraged parishes to walk with Jesus through the cross, resurrection and ascension to heaven by performing acts of charity and kindness to those in need.

In his Palm Sunday homily, Uy said that in this season of Lent, the Catholic faithful are given the opportunity to be worthy to be called the Church of Christ.

He urged parishes and parishioners to extend a helping hand to those struggling to meet their day-to-day necessities by organizing regular feeding programs for the hungry especially for the elderly, the children and the vulnerable.

They could also encourage their parishioners to share even a kilo of rice or bread for the poor.

“It’s time we lift each other up. And above all – Jesus our God will unite us. He will never leave nor forsake us in our troubles,” Uy said.

“Let’s make every parish a place where no one goes hungry, no one feels alone and no one loses hope.” He added that by doing so, “we share not just food, but God’s compassion and love seen in action.”

He also said that their Basic Ecclesial Communities and religious organizations should check on other people who might be alone, feel forgotten and emotionally in need “because sometimes, the greatest act of kindness is giving time to care.”

He asked the Catholic faithful to give hope through prayer, encouragement and acts of kindness to those who are tired and on the verge of losing hope.

“Perhaps we shall say: ‘I can only do so little.’ But remember: In the eyes of God, there is no small act of love. A meal... just a visit... some very good advice... just a prayer. These are the ways we can bear the Cross with Christ,” Uy said.

For his part, Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez urged Filipinos to use the Holy Week as a time for prayer, reflection and renewal, emphasizing the need for healing and unity amid ongoing challenges.

“Holy Week is a period of prayer and meditation or reflection. This is a time where we remember the sacrifices our Lord made as his love for us – a love that gave us hope, saved us and continues for us to get closer to Him,” he said.

He likewise expressed hope that the observance of Holy Week would bring healing not only to individuals but also to families and the nation.

He noted that amid divisions, distrust and ongoing trials, the occasion offers an opportunity to rebuild relationships and strengthen unity. — Delon Porcalla
