Cate Blanchett at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival

MANILA, Philippines — Oscar winner Cate Blanchett knows how to make a statement on the red carpet, but her most recent look was reminiscent of creativity by a Filipino artist.
The Australian actress attended the 2026 Cannes Film Festival first appearing in a black gown by Louis Vuitton, then again for the premiere of Jeanne Herry's "Garance" in an outfit from Givenchy's Fall/Winter 2026 ready-to-wear collection.
The latter shredded, backless gown was designed by Givenchy's creative director Sarah Burton, with Cate's longtime stylist Elizabeth Stewart helping pull off the look.
The dress had embroidered floral features that became fringes in the sleeves and toward the hemline, as well as voluminous fabric by the arms tied by a black bow.
The outfit had debuted during Paris Fashion Week last March and was evocative of floral paintings of Filipino artist Olan Ventura, particularly his 2022 piece "Still Life with Parrot, Tulip Poppies, Roses and Snowball" and his earlier "Still Life of Flowers."
While Givenchy did not outright say Ventura's works were the inspiration for the dress upon its Paris debut, the artist did take notice and even pinned on his Instagram account a fashion creator's video who made a similar observation.
Ventura did the same for posts about Cate wearing the Givenchy dress, resharing at least two posts on his Instagram stories.
Givenchy posted photos of Cate as well as close-up shots of the floral hanging thread embroidered halter-neck dress, matching Bonbon gloves, and black and burgundy patent pointy pumps.
The 2026 Cannes Film Festival runs until May 23 with "Garance" and 20 other movies competing for the Palme d'Or.
