The EDSA rehabilitation is expected to be completed within two years

MANILA, Philippines – The EDSA bus carousel will share the lane right next to its original one during the rehabilitation of Metro Manila’s main thoroughfare.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be rehabilitating EDSA “by segments” by the end of March. Work on the pavement will start from the bus lane and will move toward outer lanes.

I think ‘yung mga buses that are dedicated to the bus lanes ay makikipag-share muna dun sa available lanes for the time being, except dun sa mga bus stations nila,” DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan told TeleRadyo Serbisyo on Wednesday, March 5.

I understand na the Department of Transportation (DOTr) ay ini-improve din nila ‘yung bus stations nila — malaki din yata ‘yung improvement na gagawin nila,” he added.

Bus stations will remain open. According to the DPWH, the bus carousel will move back to its original lane once the rehabilitation moves on to the next lane.

Construction work will kick off from north of the highway, from the Quezon City/Caloocan boundary up to Monumento, before moving on to the 15-segment southbound portion.

The whole process is expected to be completed within two years, with work done 24/7.

The rehabilitation of the country’s most congested thoroughfare has long been overdue. The DPWH in a statement noted that it will be the “long-term solution” to improve the highway’s durability.

‘Yung pavement niyan is more than 50 years old and anytime soon, it will break. Kasi nagbe-break na ang other segments eh. Kung mapapansin po natin, talagang ‘yung riding quality ng EDSA, hindi na maganda eh… uneven na po,” Bonoan said.

The DPWH said it will be working with the Metro Manila Development Authority, the DOTr, affected local government units, and other stakeholders throughout the whole process. – Rappler.com
