MANILA, Philippines – Carlos Yulo will ramp up his preparations as he returns to action for the first time since he won a pair of gold medals in the Paris Olympics last year.

Yulo and his team will stage a training camp overseas in the lead-up to the Senior and Junior Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships that will run from June 5 to 8 in Jecheon, South Korea.

“It’ss really hot in the Philippines right now. We’re planning to have a training camp in another country,” said Yulo in Filipino on Friday, April 25, after the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) unveiled a souvenir sheet of stamps for the gymnastics star.

Yulo enjoyed a lengthy and well-deserved break after making history in the Paris Games in August as the Philippines’ first double Olympic champion.

He went back to training in January and has been hard at work since.

In fact, Yulo apologized as he arrived late for the PHLPost event held at the Lucky Chinatown Mall in Binondo as he came straight from the gym.

All eyes will be on Yulo in the continental showdown after he ruled the individual all-around, floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars last year in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, singlehandedly propelling the country to the top of the medal tally in the seniors level.

The 25-year-old also aims to qualify for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships to be hosted by Jakarta, Indonesia, in October.

“As usual, it’s really hard to come back when you’re coming from a long break. I’m enjoying the process. I’m very happy with what’s happening for me right now,” said Yulo.

Yulo added that he and his team have adjusted to the new code of points adopted by the International Gymnastics Federation for the Olympic cycle of 2025 to 2028.

That will be put to the test in the Asian championships, where Yulo has won 10 gold medals in the last three editions.

“I’m really hoping to have a safe and successful performance there,” said Yulo.

Yulo is also expected to represent the country in the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December. – Rappler.com
