First Asian to lead the College of Cardinals

MANILA, Philippines — Pope Leo XIV has approved the election of Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle as dean of the College of Cardinals, making him the first Asian to preside over the body that elects popes.

The Holy See announced the change on Friday, October 9.

Pope Leo approved the vote of the cardinal-bishops a day earlier, on October 8.

The Dean of the College of Cardinals is elected from among the cardinal-bishops.

Tagle will serve a five-year term.

He succeeds Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who has retired after serving as dean since 2020.
