MANILA, Philippines — Calamba-based entrepreneur Joan Gudito was raised by business-minded parents who established a successful jewelry company, instilling in the value of constant hard work.
Inspired by her parents, Joan founded in 2020 Selene's Glow Up Lounge, a nail and lash salon that caters to beauty enthusiasts. During that period, it was primarily about business.
But, like other business owners, Joan became exhausted and understood that amid the hectic schedules and chaos of entrepreneurship she needed to prioritize self-care, this time by discovering the true purpose of her business — helping others look beautiful, gain confidence and feel good.
"Self-care and prioritizing oneself is one of the most important commitments a woman can make — because no one else can do it for you," she said. "I see myself as my own responsibility. Every day is a choice, and I choose to take care of myself physically, energetically, emotionally, and spiritually. I am my own armor — just glammed."
She went on to share, "Feeling beautiful on the outside allows me to feel beautiful on the inside."
Her perspective on running a business has shifted dramatically — it's no longer just about the money, but also about empowering other women through self-care.

When asked what inspired her to start her nail, brow, and eyelash company, Joan replied, "My nails are like my claws: they may be polished and refined, but they carry strength — so don't mistake softness for weakness. My eyes have always been a focal point for me. They are expressive, and as gifts entrusted to me by God, I choose to honor them by enhancing them."
Going further, Joan explained that it's more than just having perfect brows and stylish nails; it's also about spiritual and emotional hygiene.
"Part of self-care is learning to walk away from people who make you feel like you have to shrink to be accepted, who make you question your worth, or who leave you uncertain about where you stand," she continued. "Trust your instincts — they were given to us for a reason. Choosing peace is choosing yourself."
Joan went on to advise women who feel compelled to achieve beauty standards, saying, "True beauty doesn't require excess — it begins with understanding your features and honoring what already exists."
"You don't need much. You are already beautiful. Never be afraid to express that beauty through your nails, your lashes, or whatever form of self-expression feels true to you," she added.
