MAYOR Joel Ruma of Rizal, Cagayan was fatally shot Wednesday night, April 23, while conducting a campaign rally in the village of Iluru.

The attack also left two others wounded, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting an urgent police investigation.

According to initial reports from the Cagayan Provincial Information Office, the shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. inside the Barangay Iluru gymnasium. Mayor Ruma was rushed to the Tuao District Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Two other individuals, identified as Merson Abiguebel and Melanie Talay, were injured in the attack. Their condition remain undisclosed as authorities work to piece together the events leading to the shooting.

Local police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, with hot pursuit operations underway. Investigators are examining possible motives, including political rivalries, personal grudges, or other underlying conflicts.
