MANILA, Philippines — The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has assured the public that it has sufficient fuel supplies for airports in the event of power interruptions.

In an interview with DZBB on Sunday, March 29, CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio said the airports have enough reserve diesel fuel, despite a possible nationwide fuel shortage due to tensions in the Middle East.

“May enough reserve fuel naman kami sa diesel. Bihira lang naman ginagamit 'yan. Lahat naka-ready 'yan just in case magkaroon ng power failure dun sa supplier namin sa labas,” Apolonio said.

(We have enough reserve fuel for diesel. We rarely use it. Everything is ready just in case there is a power failure from our supplier outside.)

CAAP manages 44 commercial airports across the archipelago.

Regarding domestic and international travel, Apolonio said airlines have sufficient fuel for their planes to operate.

However, flights may be reduced by late April or early May due to an expected increase in fuel surcharges.

“Inexpect natin 'yan after April, dahil by the 100% ang itinaas ng fuel surcharge. Siyempre 'yung mga airline, kailangan kumita rin sila sa mga rutang liliparan nila,” he said.

(We expect that to happen after April, because the fuel surcharge has increased by 100%. Naturally, the airlines also need to remain profitable on the routes they operate.)

Philippine Airlines said on March 25 that it has secured enough fuel to keep its domestic and international operations running.

However, budget airline Cebu Pacific canceled and limited several overseas flights on March 24 due to rising fuel costs.
