MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) denied that there is a scabies outbreak in the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) or in any other penal facility in the country.
In a statement Wednesday, March 11, Acting Director for Health and Welfare Services Ma. Cecilia Villanueva said the last recorded scabies outbreak in BuCor facilities occurred two years ago.
She said the situation was addressed through the "Alis Galis" campaign, a joint initiative between BuCor and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
BuCor issued the statement in response to concerns raised by Kapatid, a group of families and supporters of political prisoners.
The group had called for the immediate delivery of medical supplies and improved sanitation conditions for detainees.
Kapatid said visits to the New Bilibid Prison Reception and Diagnostic Center revealed a rapid spread of skin infections among inmates, which the group attributed to overcrowding and lack of water.
Safety protocols cited. Responding to allegations that it was difficult to bring medical supplies into prison facilities, Villanueva said BuCor enforces strict protocols to ensure accountability and prevent the entry of contraband.
"The BuCor assured both the public and the families of persons deprived of liberty that it can respond effectively to any health-related issues that may arise inside correction facilities," she said.
