MANILA, Philippines — It was lights off for the Department of Energy (DOE) after the agency lost electricity in the middle of a press conference on Thursday, May 15.

Asked if this was ironic, DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla said the power outage was an isolated incident.

“From what we have seen since the election period, during critical times, power was on and I think this is more important,” Lotilla told the media in the room while the lights were off.

Lotilla chalked it up to the media equipment in the room. The energy secretary said that the agency will take such energy use spikes into account in the future.

“I think it’s more important to look at the more general picture than this isolated incident,” he said.

Prior to the brownout, Lotilla was taking questions about ensuring steady energy supplies and transparency among energy firms.
