MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte cast her vote in the midterm elections on Monday, May 12, in her family's political stronghold of Davao City.
Duterte arrived at the Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School accompanied by her husband lawyer Mans Carpio around 8:30 a.m.
The vice president was clad in black while voting in an election seen as crucial to her political survival, as the Senate race will determine whether she finds enough allies in the upper chamber to defend her in her upcoming impeachment trial.
The House of Representatives — dominated by allies of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. — impeached the vice president in February.
During the campaign trail, Duterte's endorsed senatorial candidates from PDP-Laban — the party led by her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte — framed their campaigns around becoming the vice president's last line of defense in the looming impeachment proceedings.
Duterte urged voters last week at PDP-Laban's miting de avance to support the 10 senatorial bets of PDP-Laban, alongside Sen. Imee Marcos and Rep. Camille Villar (Las Piñas).
The vice president has been locked in an increasingly bitter feud with Marcos in the last two years and has recently accused the administration of using state resources for vote-buying.
