MANILA, Philippines — In case wanted fugitive Charlie “Atong” Ang surrenders or is apprehended anytime soon, three detention cells are waiting for him, including one that is overcrowded by almost 700 percent.

According to Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) spokesman Supt. Jayrex Joseph Bustinera, Ang could end up detained in Sta. Cruz or San Pablo in Laguna, or in Lipa City in Batangas – the same areas where the courts issued warrants of arrest against the gambling tycoon and his co-conspirators for the disappearance of cockfight enthusiasts or sabungeros.

Should Ang end up at the Sta. Cruz District Jail, Bustinera said he would have to contend with the detention facility’s 699-percent congestion rate.

“The ideal number of inmates there is 23 or less than 30, but it currently has over 100,” he said over radio dzMM.

The other two facilities in San Pablo and Lipa are new and not yet congested, Bustinera said.

The government has put up a P10-million bounty for information that would lead to Ang’s arrest.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) warned people who are helping Ang, especially police officers and government officials, that they will face arrest and prosecution.
