MANILA, Philippines — Cebuanos should participate in the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA people power revolt because it is part of the Filipinos’ moral identity, Cebu Archbishop Albert Uy said over the weekend.

“EDSA is part of our moral identity as a people. EDSA was not just a political event, it was a moral stand. It showed the world that Filipinos, guided by conscience, prayer and unity, could reject dictatorship, corruption and abuse of power without violence,” the prelate said in a social media post.

“We still believe that truth matters, integrity matters, and the dignity of every person matters. To remember EDSA is to remember who we are and who we want to remain as a people,” the post read in part.

The archbishop noted that while 40 years have since passed, reports persist of corruption, poverty, abuse of power and fragile trust in institutions in the country.

“Our children and young people are learning from what we choose to remember or forget. If we do not show them that EDSA still matters, they may grow up thinking that corruption is normal, that abuse of power is acceptable, and that silence is safer than courage,” Uy said.
