MANILA, Philippines — Activist group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) vowed to defy the no rally zones imposed by authorities along EDSA for the commemoration of the bloodless people power revolution on Feb. 25.

Bayan president Renato Reyes said yesterday they are protesting the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority decision to limit the rallies at the People Power Monument where the third leg of the Trillion Peso March will be held.

“We cannot commemorate EDSA by limiting freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly, as if we are still in the dark years of the dictatorship,” Reyes said in a statement.

The MMDA earlier designated all other portions of EDSA, including the shrine along Ortigas, as no rally zones – a move that irked Reyes.

He said commemorating the 40th anniversary of people power without going to the EDSA Shrine is antithetical to the very spirit of the bloodless revolution that toppled the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

Reyes said those who are trying to curtail peaceful assemblies have not learned the lessons of history and the principle that sovereignty resides with the people.

Despite the ban, Reyes said Bayan and its allied groups would march to the EDSA Shrine to celebrate people power and demand accountability in the flood control projects under the current Marcos administration.
