MANILA, Philippines — Tropical cyclone “Basyang” (international name: Penha) has weakened into a low pressure area (LPA) as it moved westward over the Sulu Sea early Saturday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

As of 4 a.m., the center of the LPA, formerly Basyang, was estimated at 105 kilometers southeast of Cuyo, Palawan. It was packing a central pressure of 1006 hectopascals and moving westward at 25 kilometers per hour.

No tropical cyclone wind signal is currently hoisted but the weather disturbance, together with the northeast monsoon and a shear line, is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds over several parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the surge of the northeast monsoon may bring strong to gale-force gusts, especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds over the following areas:

  • Saturday, February 7: Most of Luzon, Western Visayas, most of Negros Island Region and Zamboanga del Norte.
  • Friday, February 8: Most of Luzon, Aklan and Antique.
  • Monday, February 9: Most of Luzon, Northern Samar, northern portion of Eastern Samar, northern portion Samar, Biliran, the northern portion of Cebu, Negros Occidental and Western Visayas.

PAGASA also warned of hazardous sea conditions, with very rough seas of up to five meters expected along the seaboards of Batanes and up to 4.5 meters over the northern seaboard of the Babuyan Islands. Sea travel remains risky for all types of vessels and mariners are advised to remain in port or seek shelter until conditions improve.

Rough to moderate seas are also forecast over the seaboards of northern Luzon, parts of the Visayas and eastern sections of Mindanao. Small seacraft operators, including motorbancas, were advised not to venture out to sea, especially those operating ill-equipped vessels.

PAGASA said Basyang weakened into a low pressure area at around 2 a.m. due to unfavorable environmental conditions. The remnant low is expected to move generally west-northwestward over the Sulu Sea and cross northern Palawan but may dissipate as conditions become increasingly unfavorable.
