Baguio to sustain first aid training

BAGUIO CITY — The city government continues to give premium to basic life support and first aid training to capacitate more sectors to save people in need of such service.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said this is also part of the Summer Capital's programs in pursuit of its goal to become resilient by 2026 anchored on the need to prepare for the inevitable effects of climate change.

City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) head Charles Bryan Carame said they are targeting more life support training this year to reach more institutions and organizations, and age groups.

Last year, the division, through its training section led by Christpher Teoxon, was able to conduct a total of 2,758 of such training, 1,635 of which had participants in the 25 to 29 age group or the working age adults. Almost a thousand were conducted among the 15 to 24 years old group or the youth or young adults, 80 among senior citizens and 48 among children ages 14 years old and below.

The trainings were either scheduled by the section while some were requested by private groups. Interested parties may visit the CDRRMO at Lower Rock Quarry or may call (074)661-1455 and look for Esther Banawe.

The importance of this kind of training was highlighted last December when a 64-year-old heart attack victim was reportedly saved from certain death by a student who learned of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation from one of the city's recent trainings.

Carame said the city government, with its mission to become resilient against calamities, will work on further strengthening its capability-building thrust.

Aside from basic life support, the division also conducted 376 training on basic rope courses and rappelling, 220 on community action for disaster response and emergency, and 79 on water life-saving techniques in 2024.
