BAGUIO CITY — The Summer Capital has recorded 109 vehicular traffic accidents from Jan. 1 to Feb. 5 this year, the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) said on Monday.

The BCPO said the majority of the accidents were caused by driver's error followed by mechanical defects of motor vehicles.

Majority of the cases filed out of the incidents were reckless imprudence resulting (RIR) to damage to property with 91 cases. RIR to homicide has three cases and RIR to physical injuries has 15 cases.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, meanwhile, expressed concern over the spate of incidents and called for increased road safety awareness.

BCPO Public Information Officer Maj. Marcy Grace Marron said the office had ramped up information campaigns on road and traffic safety, particularly the Blowbagets advisory, where motorists are urged to regularly check their battery, lights, oil, water, brake, air, gas, engine, tire, and self.

"We should also observe traffic rules and regulations and exercise utmost patience in any traffic situation," Marron said.

She said the BCPO has been continuously posting advisories on accident prevention, conducting driver's education and issuing warnings through their checkpoints aside from organizing the Anti-Traffic Task Force for traffic management and control.

Marron added they are in the process of creating the BCPO View Baguio app to be launched soon and will implement "bakasyon lanes" to ease traffic congestion.
