BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — From 11 degrees Celsius on Thursday, Baguio’s temperature dropped to 10.6 degrees Celsius yesterday, placing the city within its coldest readings in recent years, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
PAGASA said the temperature, recorded at 5 a.m., was well below the city’s normal minimum temperature range of 13 to 15 degrees Celsius during this time of the year.
It was also getting close to Baguio’s coldest recorded temperatures, which have dipped to near seven degrees Celsius during extreme cold surges in past decades.
PAGASA said the sharp decline in Baguio’s temperature was caused by a cold air intrusion, which was intensified by clear skies overnight, allowing heat to escape rapidly from the surface.
Baguio’s elevation of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level aggravated the chill, resulting in near-winter conditions uncommon in most parts of the country.
The chill increased demand for winter clothing, heaters and hot meals.
PAGASA warned that similar low temperatures may persist during early mornings in the coming days.
Residents, particularly the elderly and children, have been advised to take extra precaution against cold-related illnesses.
Luzon, Visayas to experience cold weather
Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon or amihan will continue to bring lower temperatures, cloudy skies and intermittent rains overLuzon and the Visayas.
As of 3 p.m. yesterday, a low-pressure area spotted east of Mindanao was moving closer to the eastern part of the island.
The weather disturbance is expected to merge with a shear line, bringing heavy and sporadic rainfall over the Visayas and Mindanao this weekend.
Residents in eastern Mindanao including Caraga and Davao regions as well as Dinagat Islands and Surigao provinces may experience flooding and landslides due to heavy rainfall.
Eastern Visayas, particularly Leyte and Southern Leyte, may experience heavy rainfall, PAGASA said.
