MANILA, Philippines — Former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Babes Singson has resigned from the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), according to chair Andres Reyes on Wednesday, December 3.

In a press conference, Reyes announced Singson’s resignation, which will be effective on December 15, but could be extended until December 31.

“He mentioned the very intense, stressful ICI work has taken its toll on his aging body,” Reyes said.

Reyes said that despite Singson’s resignation, the public can still trust the ICI, saying that the cases and evidence they file are proof of their work. The investigative work will continue, Reyes said.

Asked how Singson’s resignation will affect the ICI, Reyes quipped that the three alumni from De La Salle University will be down to two.

Prior to Singson’s resignation, Baguio City Mayor Benjie Magalong resigned from the ICI as its special adviser.

In response to the widespread corruption in infrastructure, Singson was appointed as one of the commissioners for the ICI in September, shortly after the executive order for the commission was enacted.

The ICI is tasked with probing the flood control scam and other possible corruption schemes in government infrastructure.

The ICI’s creation has garnered mixed reactions, with some taking it as an agency taking steps towards accountability and others seeing it as a slow-moving anti-corruption body.
