MANILA, Philippines —  The developer of what would become the country’s largest data center has signed a deal with Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) for the supply of up to 40.5 megawatts of clean power.

STT Telemedia Global Data Centers (STT GDC) Philippines yesterday said it has entered into a 10-year agreement with Meralco’s retail electricity supplier MPower.

The deal involves the supply of 40.5 MW of clean energy to power the data centers of STT GDC in Fairview and Cavite.

STT Fairview is set to become the biggest in the Philippines, with a capacity that could be raised to 124 MW. The project, costing $1 billion, is partially opening this year with an initial 12 MW, scaling up the country’s capacity to host digital requirements.

STT GDC president and CEO Carlo Malana said the agreement with MPower gives the company the ability to serve the ballooning demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. Data centers like STT Fairview are known to be power-hungry facilities.

Based on data from the International Energy Agency, a single data center may require as much as the power demands of up to 100,000 households, especially if it caters primarily to AI.

This is why data center operators like STT GDC are being asked to turn to alternative sources to improve the sustainability of their business.

“By securing long-term renewable energy, we are ensuring that the mission-critical platforms our customers depend on every day are powered by sustainable sources, keeping carbon neutrality at the core of our operations,” Malana said.

Both STT Fairview and STT Cavite are designed to manage critical infrastructure for large-scale firms and tech innovators in the Philippines. STT Fairview, in particular, is being propped up as the most AI-ready data center in the country.

STT Fairview is starting to deploy several megawatts of capacity to kickstart its operations. STT Cavite, on the other hand, is undergoing testing and commissioning.

The world is needing more and more data centers  to store applications and information from tech giants like Amazon, Google and Meta.

STT GDC, a joint venture among Ayala Corp., Globe Telecom Inc. and STT Global Data Centers, wants to turn the Philippines into a preferred destination for digital investments by building some of the country’s biggest data centers.
