MANILA, Philippines — Elizabeth Alchin and Georgia Johnson of Australia survived Japan’s Asami Shiba and Reika Murakami, 21-17, 17-21, 15-11, to claim the bronze medal in the Rebisco Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Beach Tour Nuvali Open yesterday in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

Alchin and Johnson had a roller-coaster ride, ousting Khylem Progella and Sofia Pagara of the Philippines in the quarterfinals, 21-18, 21-19, before losing to New Zealand’s Shaunna Polley and Olivia MacDonald, 21-16, 23-21, in the semis to drop to the battle for the bronze.

Johnson and Alchin, the second-highest rated team in the field, held the upperhand throughout the third set against the Japanese.

Polley and MacDonald of New Zealand will meet Stefanie Fejes and Jasmine Fleming of Australia in the final.
