MANILA, Philippines — The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cebu has urged Ateneo de Manila University to help secure the education of the surviving siblings of late student-athlete Rene Baterbonia following the accident that resulted in his death.
In a statement issued on June 10, Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy said that helping ensure the continuation of the siblings' education would be a "fitting tribute" to the dreams of the young man who died during a recent team-building tragedy.
"I am confident that the leadership of Ateneo de Manila University also grieves over this heartbreaking loss and shares the desire to seek the truth and accompany the family during this painful journey. Beyond words, concrete acts of solidarity can help ease the burden of those left behind," Uy said.
"One meaningful way of honoring Rene's memory would be for Ateneo to help ensure that his siblings are able to complete their education. Those who knew Rene describe him as a young man who dreamed not only for himself but also for the well-being and future of his loved ones. To help fulfill that dream would be a fitting tribute to his life, generosity, and sacrifice," he added.
The prelate stressed the need to provide the bereaved family with clear and accurate answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
"While no explanation can ever bring Rene back, honesty and transparency can help provide a measure of peace and closure to those who mourn him. If lapses or mistakes were committed, a sincere acknowledgment and apology would be an important step toward healing and rebuilding trust," Uy said.
"As we seek truth, accountability, and healing, let us also not forget the power of prayer. Let us pray for the eternal repose of Rene's soul, for healing and strength within the Ateneo community, and for comfort, consolation, and hope for the bereaved Baterbonia family during this time of profound grief," he added.
Authorities are investigating the June 8 incident that led to the deaths of Baterbonia and Nigerian import Divine Adili.
In a separate statement, Ateneo said that coach Tab Baldwin and team manager Christopher Quimpo have gone on leave while the university conducts a fact-finding inquiry into the incident.
