MANILA, Philippines — The provincial government of Rizal has asked the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to investigate the collapse of a landfill heap that left at least three people missing.

In a statement Sunday night, February 22, Rizal Governor Nina Ynares said the local government formally requested the DENR to immediately investigate the incident and "determine any potential environmental, and public safety implications arising therefrom, including any reported or possible injury, missing person or loss of life resulting from the said incident."

The DENR said it is already looking into the matter through its Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

The EMB has coordinated with landfill operator Green Leap Solid Waste Management and directed it to stabilize the site, submit an action plan and provide daily project updates.

The Municipal Government of Rodriguez, Rizal earlier reported at least three people missing.

"Our concerned offices are continuously working with the private operator of the landfill in monitoring the situation to discover the whereabouts of such persons and adequately address the situation," the municipal government said.

Urban poor group Kadamay, however, claimed the number of missing persons could be as high as 50.

Kadamay condemned the incident, calling it a result of systemic neglect. Members of the group and residents of the affected community held a candlelight vigil for those still unaccounted for.
