NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines – Unidentified assailants rained bullets on the lawn of radio broadcaster Rey Siason’s home in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, police told Rappler on Monday, April 21.

Initial reports said the incident happened at around 11 pm on Sunday.

Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) Director Colonel Rainerio de Chavez told Rappler that he already instructed Talisay City Police Chief Lieutenant Colonel Salvador Trono Jr. to investigate the incident.

“For now, we are not exact yet on whether the strafing incident on Rey Siason’s house compound was an election-related case,” De Chavez said.

If the incident is classified as “election-related violence,” police said it would be the first case in the province in this year’s elections. NOCPPO investigators shared that they are not discounting the possibility that the attack may be politically motivated.

Siason’s daily radio programs on dyRL Radyo Pilipino and dyKB RPN-Bacolod often tackle topics against various political figures in Bacolod and Negros Occidental.

Siason told Rappler on Monday that he woke up to a series of gunshot sounds coming from the front of their home in Carmela Valley Homes in Talisay City.

Upon checking, Siason found 45 empty shells from a .45 caliber pistol scattered on their lawn. Police said that there were 16 deformed shells found at the scene.

Bullet holes were also found on Siason’s Toyota Fortuner and motorcycle that was parked in their garage.

This was not the first time a gun attack was launched against Siason. On September 19, 2018, unknown assailants rained bullets on Siason’s house days before he filed his certificate of candidacy as an independent councilor in Talisay City for the May 2019 midterm elections.

Siason, a former Bombo Radyo reporter-turned-block time radio anchorman, theorized that the assailants behind the recent attack were the same individuals who strafed his home in 2018.

“They want to silence me because I am hitting them on radio, my radio programs every day,” the broadcaster said.

Siason refused to name anyone behind the attack, however.

Siason is the partner of broadcaster Roger Ledesma in their daily program “Borderline” aired over dyRL from 12 noon to 1 pm, and dyKB’s “Riding in Tandem” from 2 pm to 3 pm and 4 pm to 5 pm.

On March 5, Ledesma filed criminal and administrative charges before the Office of the Ombudsman Visayas against Bacolod City officials over a P900-million land banking issue.

As of this writing, Talisay cops disclosed that they are looking into two angles behind the incident: work-related or business-related.

As to the claim of Siason that the case was election-related, Trono said, “We are not yet there.”

“But rest assured, we will explore all angles as we continue probing this strafing incident until the case is resolved,” the Talisay City police chief said. – Rappler.com
