BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Thirty-one barangays in four towns and cities in Negros Occidental experienced ashfall and sulfur stench after Kanlaon Volcano emitted ash for 17 minutes on Friday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the ash emission generated plumes that rose 300 meters above the crater and drifted southwest.
The provincial disaster risk reduction and management office said that ashfall and sulfur stench were reported in villages located in the cities of Bago and La Carlota as well as in the towns of La Castellana and Pontevedra.
Phivolcs said 14 volcanic quakes were also detected around Kanlaon. The volcano has been under Alert Level 2 since July 2025.
Entry into Kanlaon’s four-kilometer-radius danger zone is strictly prohibited due to the possibility of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.
Pilots have been advised to avoid flying an aircraft close to the summit.
