MANILA, Philippines — The remaining ASEAN energy meetings will proceed virtually this year as the ongoing global oil crisis prompts the Philippines to adopt more cost-efficient and energy-conscious approaches.

Despite the online setup, the Department of Energy (DOE) said key sectoral deliverables would continue as scheduled, with stronger emphasis on urgent priorities such as energy security.

“Even as we adjust the format of our meetings, the Philippines remains fully committed to delivering a productive and results-oriented ASEAN energy chairship,” Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said yesterday.

Under the Philippine chairship, the DOE will lead a full slate of ASEAN energy engagements in the coming months.

This includes sub-sector meetings in April and May, the senior officials meeting on energy in June and the ASEAN ministers on energy meeting in September.

“By moving the meetings online, we can use resources more prudently, remain responsive to current realities and sustain close coordination with our fellow ASEAN member states and partners,” Garin said.

This year’s meetings are expected to help lay the groundwork for the initial implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action 2026-2030.

Serving as a five-year blueprint, the action plan will guide the regional bloc in aligning priorities and coordinating energy initiatives across key areas.

These include the ASEAN Power Grid, renewables, nuclear power, oil and gas connectivity, energy security and sustainability, and energy efficiency and conservation.

“As chair, the Philippines is committed to ensuring our collective efforts deliver tangible benefits, from powering homes and businesses to strengthening resilience and supporting inclusive growth for all ASEAN peoples,” Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella said.
