COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A group of soldiers went viral on Facebook after engaging in a different kind of firefight, not using firearms but hoses and water, to put out a fire that razed a passenger bus at a stretch of highway in Barangay Tuboran in Mawab, Davao de Oro on Monday, June 29.
Radio reports on Tuesday quoted local executives and officials of the Mawab Municipal Police Station as saying that personnel of the 10th Infantry Division used the firetruck in their headquarters in Camp General Manuel Yan in Barangay Tuboran in putting out the fire razed a unit of the Davao Metro Shuttle Bus, while on its way to New Bataan town in Davao de Oro.
Personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection assigned to the Mawab Fire Station and soldiers from the Army’s 10th ID from Camp General Manuel Yan first rescued all the passengers of the bus before they put out the fire that destroyed the unit.
The fire was reportedly caused by a defect in the electrical system of the bus, which supplies current to its interior lights and air conditioning blowers.
Army Major Gen. Alvin Luzon, commander of 10th ID, said the team of soldiers who responded to the incident are trained emergency responders who have a firetruck in their team.
“Responding to all sorts of emergencies is what they do,” Luzon said.
Local officials were quoted in radio reports as saying that they were surprised to learn that the headquarters of the 10th ID has a firefighting team equipped with a fire truck.
