MANILA, Philippines — Super rookie Shaina Nitura flashed her brilliance anew as Adamson made short work of listless University of the East, 25-20, 25-15, 25-12, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Nitura, the former juniors MVP, delivered 18 points on 16 hits, a block and an ace along with 11 digs as the Lady Falcons gained a piece of the second spot at 2-1 with idle University of the Philippines.
The Lady Falcons needed only 72 minutes to score the straight-sets romp with Nitura registering her third straight double-digit game for an early Rookie of the Year and MVP campaign.
In a smooth collegiate transition so far after anchoring Adamson’s first UAAP girls’ volleyball title last year via a 14-0 sweep, Nitura first reset the UAAP rookie record with 33 points against Ateneo before firing 16 in a 3-0 defeat to La Salle.
Backstopping her this time were Frances Mordi and May Ann Nuique with 11 and nine points, respectively.
Later, Angge Poyos exploded for 28 points on 24 hits, three blocks and an ace plus 16 digs as Santo Tomas stormed back to frustrate La Salle anew, 25-12, 22-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-13, and gain a share of second spot.
Santo Tomas improved to 2-1 to tie first-game winner Adamson and idle University of the Philippines behind unbeaten and reigning champion National U (3-0).
