MANILA, Philippines — Petro Gazz stalwart Jonah Sabete felt they would need to be tougher and better if they’re to sustain their run and get a breakthrough finals stint in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference.

“We have to really work harder, not just in scoring, but also on defense to have a chance at winning,” said Sabete moments after the Angels swooped down on the Creamline Cool Smashers, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, in their critical semifinal duel Saturday night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

With that reversal, the Angels are now on the verge of making the finals where they will have a crack at claiming the one championship that has eluded the franchise since joining the league seven years ago.

“That’s our main goal,” said Sabete, whose squad has won two Reinforced Conference crowns but none outside of it.

Sabete and a juggernaut in Brooke Van Sickle powered Petro Gazz to the emphatic win over Creamline.

The high-leaping Sabete proved she isn’t just all talk after unloading a 19-point performance including a match-high five blocks while Van Sickle unleashed the hammer by leading all hitters with 26 points.

Petro Gazz will tackle Choco Mucho next tomorrow at the PhilSports Arena and Akari Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
