MANILA, Philippines — Young artists Andres Muhlach and KD Estrada are embracing the thrill that acting on stage gives, one different to any onscreen portrayal.
Both actors star in "Bagets the Musical," based on the 1984 film by Maryo de los Reyes, a major feat in Philippine theater as the first local jukebox musical to utilize international songs.
The production marks Andres' stage debut as he portrays Adie, the role originated by his father Aga.
KD portrays Arnel, originally played by Raymond Lauchengco, in his second production after "Walang Aray" (third if one counts "Takot Ang Pinoy" which he did while on "Pinoy Big Brother: Kumunity Season 10").
Philstar.com approached both actors backstage of the Newport Performing Arts Theater the gala performance of "Bagets the Musical" last January 29 for their thoughts on tackling the stage.
Andres reflected on the cast's rehearsal days leading up to opening night, ultimately leading to the stage which he described as exciting and a rush.
KD gave similiar happy sentiments and added that "Bagets the Musical" was his most physically taxing project he's done to date.
"Pero 'yung satisfaction after every rehearsal and run, it makes me want to cry every night honestly, kasi ito talaga 'yung pinaghirapan namin," KD also said.
The Muhlach family, including Aga, was present for the musical's opening night and a video of Andres appearing emotional went viral after that evening's performance.
"You guys can see naman how it feels sa video, super emotional naman talaga," Andres recalled, reiterating that it was a full circle moment to have him take on Aga's iconic role 40 years later.
Andres also shared how happy he was that his family was there to support him all the way, then the conversation pivoted to comments about his performance.
The young actor admitted he was still learning and trying to improve in his craft.
"I really was pushing myself talaga, in a sense na alam kong behind ako so kailangan humabol... every night and morning nandito ako earlier than other people," Andres said, praising his "Bagets the Musical" co-stars.
Andres alternates Adie with Mico Chua while KD alternates Arnel with Ethan David. Rounding out the main cast are Tonton (Milo Cruz and Migo Valid), Topee (Jeff Moses and Sam Shoaf) and Gilbert (Tomas Rodriguez and Noel Comia Jr.).
In the original movie, Tonton was played by William Martinez, J.C. Bonnin portrayed Topee and Herbert Bautista originated Gilbert.
