Amid discord over Duterte arrest, Bohol bishop urges Filipinos to revisit love for country

REVISIT LOVE. Tagbilaran Bishop Alberto Uy said in a social media post that Filipinos must turn to prayers, seek God’s power of healing "for every pained heart, every violated sensitivity, every broken hope, every aching spirit, and every wounded soul."

Tagbilaran Bishop Alberto Uy says that while the Catholic Church respects the differing views of fellow Filipinos, he reminded citizens that they must not continue going down the path of conflict which will eventually lead to the nation's destruction

CEBU, Philippines – As controversy over the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte continues to spark debates online, Tagbilaran Bishop Alberto Uy has called on Filipinos to revisit their “love of country anchored on justice.”

Uy, a well-known religious leader and anti-corruption advocate in the Visayas, made this plea to fellow Catholics and Filipinos in a social media post on Tuesday evening, March 18.

To recall, Duterte was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 11, and is now facing charges for crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, related to the extrajudicial killings committed during his war on drugs.

“Witnessing this event has sparked serious emotions, even discord among our fellow Filipinos, that if left unattended can divide us further as a nation. We do not want to tread this path,” the bishop said.

Uy urged his 591,000-strong constituency of the Diocese of Tagbilaran in Bohol to avoid going down “the path of conflict” and recognize their responsibility towards the country and the future generation.

The bishop highlighted the role of leaders to ensure accountability, transparency, and fairness amid the conflicting narratives being spread on social media and mainstream media.

“We call on our fellow Filipinos, our church leaders of all denominations, to revisit our love of country anchored on justice as we contemplate Amos 5:24, ‘But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream’,” the bishop said.

Rallies and fake news

The Tagbilaran Bishop’s statement came after the release of another statement from Bohol Governor Erico Aris Aumentado who denied claims that he was involved in attempts to cut the electricity of a pro-Duterte prayer rally in the province.

The rally was held on Monday evening, March 17, in Trinidad town, Bohol.

Naa na pod gipakalat na fake news! Wala ta namugong ug mobabag sa mga kalihukan na prayer rallies para ni [Duterte] sa Bohol,” the governor’s statement on Tuesday afternoon, March 18, read.

(Fake news has been spread again! We are not stopping or obstructing prayer rallies for [Duterte] in Bohol)

The provincial government echoed the governor’s statement on Wednesday, March 19, explaining that the cause of the power outage during the rally was due to a gecko getting electrocuted, according to the Bohol II Electric Cooperative, Inc..

A post from the power utility company corroborated the provincial government’s statement on the electrocuted gecko.
