MANILA, Philippines — Amid rumors of government destabilization, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday, December 3, announced an increase in the base pay of military and uniformed personnel (MUP).
The administration is currently facing its largest corruption scandal, with Marcos’ critics doubting whether he could still lead the nation. The Palace has condemned any would-be attempts to “destabilize” the government following the corruption scandal.
In a recorded statement, Marcos lauded the military, saying that they have remained steadfast against challenges such as the devastating cyclones and earthquakes.
“Hindi rin nawawala ang banta sa ating seguridad. Ngunit, panatag ang sambayanan dahil nandiyan ang ating kapulisan at kasundaluhan,” Marcos said.
(The threat to our security has not disappeared. However, the county can rest easy because our police and military are there.)
Marcos did not state what kind of threats these were, however, it should be noted that, on top of the destabilization woes, the country is also experiencing territorial tensions with China over the West Philippine Sea.
To repay the uniformed personnel for their efforts, Marcos said that there will be an increase in base pay.
“Bilang pagkilala sa inyong walang sawang paglilingkod, dedikasyon, at husay, ating itataas ang Base Pay ng MUP,” Marcos said.
(As recognition for your tireless service, deviation, and skills, we will increase the Base Pay of the MUP.)
The amount of the increase has not been specified.
The uniformed personnel included in the increase of base pay are uniformed personnel from the following agencies: Department of National Defense, Department of Interior and Local Government, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Corrections, National Mapping and Resource Information Authority.
The increase will be implemented in three tranches: the first one being on January 1, 2026. The second and third tranches will be implemented on the same day in 2027 and 2028.
Marcos also said that the subsistence allowance of the MUP will be P350 per day.
