Alex Eala-Venus Williams tandem set for Canadian Open

MANILA, Philippines — After their reunion failed to push through in the DC Open, Alex Eala and Venus Williams will give it another go at the Canadian Open, also known as the National Bank Open in Toronto.

The Filipino-American duo received a wild card entry to play in Toronto, where Eala is also competing in the singles event of the WTA 1000 hard court tournament.

Eala, the newly minted DC Open champion, and the 14-time Grand Slam doubles winner Williams take on Liudmila Samsonova and Miyu Kato in the round of 32 late Thursday night (Manila time).

The 21-year-old Eala and Williams joined forces for the first time at the Bad Homburg Open, where they reached the quarterfinal before falling to Olivia Nicholls and Tereza Mihalikova, 6-3, 6-2.

The Filipino star was a late scratch in the DC Open doubles and was replaced by Russian Diana Shnaider.

Eala begins her singles campaign against American Alycia Parks Thursday morning. She is coming off a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over American World No. 3 Jessica Pegula in Washington to claim her first WTA Tour-level crown.

The 46-year-old Williams also saw action in singles but bowed out in the round of 128 after losing to Kamilla Rakhimova, 6-4, 6-1, on Monday.
