MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala dethroned defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland, 7-6(9), 6-2, on Saturday to reach the last 16 and continue to make history at Wimbledon.
Eala survived a marathon in the first set before catching fire in the second to extend her historic Grand Slam run to the fourth round of Wimbledon, where she will face Jasmine Paolini.
Playing her best tennis yet, this is the furthest the Filipino tennis ace has reached since competing in the Grand Slam main draws last year.
