MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala and former world No.1 Naomi Osaka of Japan cross paths for the first time in the 2026 Mubadala DC Open semifinal on Sunday (Philippine time).

Eala said she is looking forward to facing Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and the tournament’s third seed, as the Filipino tennis player eyes a spot in the final in Washington.

“She is, of course, such an accomplished player, and I think she’s made waves on and off the tennis court for so many reasons, and there’s so much respect to her for that,” said Eala of Osaka, currently ranked No. 13.

“I’m really excited. I haven’t had much time to think about it, but I will definitely think about it after I get off.”

Eala stunned No.2 seed Elina Svitolina anew in the quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-4, while Osaka survived Elisabetta Cocciaretto, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the semifinal.

Osaka also welcomed the chance to face Eala, who has made waves on the WTA Tour over the past year.

“I’ve never played Alex before, but I’ve seen some of her matches. She’s had an incredible year so far. Honestly, playing her would really be fun for me just to get that knowledge about how she plays,” during the post-match presser.

Both players came off a solid run at Wimbledon. Eala reached the round of 16 in her best Grand Slam campaign yet, while Osaka made it to the quarterfinals, her best finish in the tournament so far.
