For the first time in two years, Alas Pilipinas Men fall short of a medal in the Southeast Asian V. League

ILOCOS SUR, Philippines – Alas Pilipinas Men fell short of a medal finish in the Candon leg of the 5th Southeast Asian (SEA) V. League as Indonesia snagged silver following a 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 dumping of the Filipinos at the Candon City Arena here on Sunday, July 13.

The Philippines settled for fourth as the Alas crew failed to find its mark on offense, with tournament Best Opposite Spiker Leo Ordiales held to just 12 points.

“Our performance wasn’t up to par tonight, we were not able to pass the ball as well as we have wanted to,” Alas wing spiker Buds Buddin said in Filipino.

It’s the first time the Philippines missed the podium since 2023, where Alas also ended up fourth.

Alas wrapped up its run in the five-team contest with a 2-2 record and a 5-point quotient, behind first-leg champion Thailand (3-1, 9 points),  Indonesia (3-1, 8 points), and Vietnam (2-2, 7 points).

Still, the Philippines earned valuable FIVB rankings points, on top of a US $10,000 cash prize

Ordiales also feels honored to bag an individual award.

“I’m happy because it’s my first time to receive an individual award in international play,” Ordiales said in Filipino.

“It boosts my self-confidence and gives me reason to improve myself further.”

Boy Arnez Arabi powered the Indonesians with a game-high 21 points built on 15 attacks, 2 blocks, and 4 aces.

Indonesia virtually dominated the entire contest from start to finish, outgunning the Philippines on attacks (50-30), blocks, (4-1), and aces (7-2).

Thailand, meanwhile, only needed three sets to dispatch winless Cambodia (0-4) in its final match, 25-19, 25-22, 25-16.

It will just be a quick break for all teams as they get back to action for the tournament’s second leg in Jakarta, Indonesia from July 16 to 20. – Rappler.com
