AFP probing Paolo Duterte’s security detail

MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is verifying the identities of the security personnel assigned to Rep. Paolo Duterte (Davao City, 1st District). 

Duterte is facing complaints of physical injuries and grave threat after a video surfaced of him allegedly trying to stab a man in a bar. Several others were seen with the Davao lawmaker, but they merely watched as the man, assumed to be Duterte, attacked the victim. 

Members of the AFP were alleged to be seen among the bystanders. 

In a statement on Thursday, the AFP said that the Comelec has allowed Duterte to have a security detail during the election period, in line with the commission’s rules. 

“In line with this, the AFP is currently undertaking an internal inquiry to thoroughly verify and validate the identities of the personnel designated to provide security to Representative Duterte,” the AFP said in a statement. 

“The AFP remains a professional and disciplined organization committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all personnel conduct themselves in accordance with the highest standards of military service,” the AFP said.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) recently fired two cops for allegedly moonlighting for Duterte. The two officers were assigned to different stations. 

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil said that moonlighting in the police force was illegal. 

“That’s perpetual disqualification from any government post. This is our warning to the police force: make sure to take your job religiously,” Marbil said. 

However, the AFP did not make mention of the video itself, only saying that it would verify Duterte’s security detail.
