MANILA, Philippines — The Aboitiz Group’s infrastructure unit has completed upgrades for its airports in Visayas and Mindanao, which account for 20 percent of air traffic in the Philippines.
Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. (AIC) yesterday said the contingency and safety improvements for the Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA) and Laguindingan Airport have been completed.
AIC said the enhancements would enhance passenger safety and scale up the airports’ resilience, ensuring the gateways are prepared to handle more travelers next year.
In particular, AIC upgraded the fire detection systems of the Laguindingan Airport. With this, the airport is better equipped to provide quicker response and evacuation when needed during a fire.
Likewise, AIC conducted technical assessment on the firefighting equipment in BPIA, covering the fire hoses, pump engine and water pressure. AIC hopes to avert the risk of equipment failure in undertaking this assessment.
Similarly, AIC cleaned air conditioning units and the sewage treatment plant in BPIA to improve the airport’s air quality and hygiene environment for passenger comfort.
Prior to this, AIC had rolled out emergency and safety measures for BPIA and the Laguindingan Airport with the oversight of the Department of Transportation and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
AIC president and CEO Cosette Canilao said the company is investing in asset improvements for its airports because they oversee at least a fifth of the country’s air traffic.
Currently, AIC handles the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), BPIA and Laguindingan Airport, which facilitate 16 million passengers when combined. MCIA is being geared up as the connectivity hub, as guests can transfer to domestic and international destinations from it.
BPIA is designated as the leisure hub, welcoming incoming guests to island destination Panglao. The Laguindingan Airport is assigned as the service hub, as it scales up Mindanao’s accessibility and viability for business and tourism.
“Our commitment goes beyond infrastructure; it’s about making every flight safer, every journey more reliable and every airport experience more world-class,” Canilao said.
