LAGUNA, Philippines – Cavite Board Member Francisco Gabriel “Abeng” Diaz Remulla handily won the gubernatorial election in his province, in the absence of serious competition.

Based on the partial, unofficial count of the Commission on Elections as of Monday night, May 12, Remulla has already obtained 885,704 votes, a blowout compared to the 223,994 votes garnered by his closest opponent, independent candidate Weng Aguinaldo. Some 69.51% of election returns have been transmitted.

Governor Athena Tolentino, who replaced Jonvic Remulla after his appointment as interior secretary in October, decided to sit out the 2025 polls.

Ram Revilla of the largest dynasty in Cavite, who was unopposed, was elected vice governor, obtaining 985,014 votes.

Abeng, a public administration graduate from the University of the Philippines, is new to elective office. He was only designated board member in 2023 by the National Unity Party after his brother Crispin Diego “Ping” won the special election to fill in Cavite’s 7th District vacated by their father Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla who was appointed justice secretary in 2022.

The 31-year-old Abeng was executive assistant to his father who was then Cavite governor from 2016 to 2019, and chief of staff when Boying was elected district lawmaker from 2019 to 2022.

Aside from Abeng, Ping and Jacinta Maria Remulla easily clinched victories in the 7th District and the vice mayoralty of the town of Naic.

Abeng, when asked about his family cultivating a dynasty during Rappler’s election town hall in April, said he is aware of the big shoes he has to fill.

“I have to leave something for Caviteños to see that they’ll know that it came from me. Not just because of my uncle or my father, but things that are directly coming from me,” he had said.

“My vision for Cavite is more inclusive for businesses. We want to boost our infrastructures and have Cavite be more attractive for investors to come in so we can lower the price of basic goods, we can have more jobs, we have more income for the province, which will further economic growth,” Remulla added. – Rappler.com
