ILOILO CITY — Ninety-eight police officers under the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) have been classified as obese this month, based on an assessment of their latest body mass index (BMI).

PMaj. Shella Mae Sangrines, ICPO spokesman, said these policemen were categorized into three obesity levels: 82 have been classified as obese 1; 11 as obese 2; and five as obese 3.

They are assigned across various police stations in the city.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III earlier said that police personnel must maintain a body weight within 5 kilograms above or below the norm.

Republic Act 6975, or the Department of the Interior and Local Government Act of 1990, requires that PNP personnel maintain a weight within 5 kilograms of the standard based on height, age, sex or BMI.

Officers who fail to meet this requirement will be given six months to one year to lose or gain weight and comply with the standard.

If they remain overweight after this period, they face separation or dismissal from the service, Sangrines said.

To respond to Torre’s directive, the ICPO has launched a fitness initiative dubbed “Pulisteniks,” held every Tuesday and Thursday at the ICPO headquarters.
