MANILA, Philippines — At least eight people have been reported dead due to the effects of tropical cyclone Basyang (international name: Penha), the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Saturday, February 7.
OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Agustin Mariano said four fatalities were recorded in Cagayan de Oro City after a landslide hit a residential area, while three deaths were reported in Iligan City due to flooding. One person reportedly drowned in Agusan del Norte.
All figures remain subject to validation, Mariano added.
Iligan City, which was placed under a state of calamity on Friday, saw severe flooding that swept away vehicles and caused the collapse of a year-old steel bridge in Barangay Puga-an. Local officials said around 3,800 families were affected, with floodwaters reaching waist-deep levels in some areas.
More than 2,000 individuals were evacuated in Cagayan de Oro City, while thousands of passengers were stranded nationwide after sea travel was suspended amid rough sea conditions.
Basyang made landfall over Bayabas, Surigao del Sur early Friday as a tropical storm, then weakened into a tropical depression after crossing Agusan del Norte, Bohol Sea and Bohol. It made a total of five landfalls.
By early Saturday, the state weather bureau PAGASA said Basyang had weakened into a low pressure area over the Sulu Sea.
