BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Eight people died and five others were injured after the multicab they were riding flipped over and fell into a rocky terrain in Ayungon, Negros Oriental on Saturday.

Lt. Stephen Polinar, Negros Oriental police provincial office spokesman, said the victims were on their way to a cemetery to attend a death anniversary when the vehicle lost its brakes along a downhill slope in Barangay Tiguib.

Edwin Dequit, Zenaida Sabanal, Libby de Jesus, Ernesta Villasco, Anabelle Devero and Elphy Deguit, a barangay health worker, were all declared dead on arrival at the Bindoy District Hospital.

Polinar said two other passengers died during treatment.

Driver Juan Maratas survived the accident, along with Fibronia Agcaoili, Dehino Maylinda and two children, aged 13 and eight. All are being treated at Bindoy District Hospital.
