MANILA, Philippines — Eight bus operators at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) are under investigation for overcharging amid President Marcos’ directive to suspend fare hikes.
Show-cause orders will be issued to Bicol Isarog, RU Diaz, St. Martha, RMB, DLTB, Bicol Magayon, Superlines and JVH, according to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
“If they are not going to follow the President’s directives, they will be penalized accordingly,” LTFRB chairman Vigor Mendoza said yesterday.
Operators hiking fares without the approval of regulators will face suspension or revocation of their franchises, the Department of Transportation warned yesterday.
“While we understand the difficulties faced by bus opera tors, they are prohibited from increasing fares on their own,” Jason Salvador, PITX head of corporate communications and government relations, yesterday told radio dzBB.
Profiteering
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has stepped up its price monitoring of basic goods this Holy Week, warning traders against profiteering amid Middle East tensions.
“We have arrested a number of people for unauthorized price increases in the past days. We will not hesitate to arrest more in the interest of consumer protection,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nar tatez Jr. said.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard will send ships to key ports to ferry commuters who will be stranded due to the lack of vessels, a problem worsened by rising fuel costs. — Alexis Romero, Andrew Ronquillo, Mark Ernest Villeza
